Ruffled Diaper Bag Tutorial

I have made hundreds of these bags (literally).   They are awesome.  They can work for virtually anything.   They are strong, and stand up by themselves making them a perfect diaper bag.

Inside with lots of pockets.

I have shown everything you need above.  I forgot to picture the side pocket pieces that i gathered with elastic and the pellon extra firm stabilizer.  You need two 13x13 pieces of the stabilizer plus one for the bottom which is 8x13.

I start by making my straps.
Sew along sides with right sides together and flip.
I pin my bottom liner piece, 1 stabilizer piece, and one denim piece together.
Set aside for later.

Sew along the top and bottom of inside side pocket piece (10x9) with right sides together and flip.

Sew a casing along the top and run a 6.5 piece of elastic through with safety pin and sew in place.

Sew your two outer side pieces of denim with right sides together and flip and pin.

I sewed my 4 outer pieces together and centered my denim appliqued pocket in place.
Then place on top of stabilizer.

Sew your inner pocket in place attached to stabilizer.  Then pin straps in place.

Sew along top of bag with straps in place with right sides together.

Flip your pieces and pin in place.

Sew together along sides with front sides together.  You will need a heavy duty needle and go slow.

Flip open and sew next piece.

Once all pieces are sewn together add ruffle or if you don't want ruffle top stitch along top keeping the straps up and out of the way.

Gather your ruffled strips and sew in place.

After that sew bag together on the final seam with front sides together.  The bottom of the bag is still open.

Attach bottom of back with the outside together.

Sew all the way around the bag.

Flip bag with right sides out once the bottom is sewn.  Don't worry you can see all the seams on the inside.  We will fix that in the next step.

Top stich around all the edges to hide the interior seams.  This also stiffens the bag.

Your are done.  You will have a one of a kind bag that everyone will envy!

  5. I'm going to have to try this. I am in need of a new diaper bag and after the zippers breaking on more commercial ones than I'd like to count, homemade just might be the ticket!
