Pottery Barn Knock Off: Butterfly Cafe Pillow

Butterfly Cafe Lumbar Pillow Cover, 16 x 26"
Pottery Barn Butterfly Cafe Pillows

Em and I were talking the other day about Pottery Barn and future blog post ideas and,  I said "have you seen that butterfly on the cover?"  She said "OMG I am going to make that."  "I said no...I was going to make that."  Instead of our weekly cuss out!  I said lets see who can make it better!!  Thus you have our 1st of many sisterly competitions.  We work the same pretty much so we both started with our old favorite...the overhead projector.

We each made transpearancies from the magazine and penciled in our butterfly designs on drop cloth.

We both began painting our dark color with acrylic paints.  I (Amy) used a a dark brown and Em used black.

We then began shading in with yellows and blue.

We sewed the back of the pillow on and made it so it could be removed.  We heat set the paint so that it could be washed.

Here is where the FUN begins.  What is at STAKE?  Bragging rights and something else that we can say

that we are better at!!  Did I mention that Emily and I are very competitive!!
Please join in the fun and comment on which pillow you like better.  #1 or #2.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!!

  1. I know this isn't what you want to hear probably but they are both so gorgeous and truthfully they look quite similar. I wish I could paint like that!! Marvelous!!

  2. tough call! I THINK I like number one because it has more contrast with the darker edges and lighter blue. It's more subtle. (though if i was gonna take one home, i would have to ask my hubby which one because i truly love them both!)

  3. very pretty, love both of them

    ReplyDelete
  4. Both are excellently executed! If you twisted my arm, however, I'd have to take the more muted pillow ~ only because I like the more subtle colors of the spectrum. So, I choose #1 ~ sorry to the #2 artist!

  5. These are GORGEOUS, I am very impressed. I love them both. 1 is more subtle in color, 2 more vibrant. I guess I would pick 1. But they are AMAZING!!!!! Ellen

  6. WOW, Ya'll did a super fabulous job! This pillow is on my list to try and reproduce. ..I can't choose a fave..they both look awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Oh these are SO lovely, I can decide which one is better. I love the muted tones of 1 as well as the more vibrant colors of 2. I suppose it would depend on which room in my house they would adorn!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Love the soft color of #1! What a great project.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Ack! although I like the 1st one for it's softer colors, I have to go with #2 for it's extra bit of detail!

Good job ladies! now mail one up to Canada for me won't you?!

    no???...you're keeping them??...hrm...carry on then ;)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Wow these are both amazing! What a clever move with the overhead projector - A+ on both versions:)

    ReplyDelete
  11. hmmm...though decision. I'm thinking, I like #2 just a smidge better.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I can't tell the difference! Was this a 'trick' question :)? i think maybe # ! is a wee bit darker & richer in colour.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I love both! But, I actually like the brighter colors of #2 - especially the more "yellowness"

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hmmm...tough call, they're both absolutely lovely! Great work! Visiting from icantstopcrafting.blogspot.com

  15. Oh my! How long did this take you ladies?! They look awesome but I don't think I'd have the patience to finish. I vote #1 because I like the more subtle colors but really they are both awesome.

  16. I love them both. I did a sharp intake of breath when I saw these on the cover, too. Are you willing to help a sister out and share your transparencies?

    ReplyDelete
  17. oh my - you guys are fabulous artists!!! It is really hard to choose a favorite - but if I was forced, I would say #2 - simply because the colors are slightly brighter, and I am always drawn to bright colors. But they truly are both fabulous - not easy to choose - just subtle nuances. Awesome job!!!

  18. OM GOSSSSHHHHHH!! they are amazing.....I have been wanting to tackle this pillow for a while!!! You both did an amazing job...#2's body of the butterfly is gorgeous, but the overall look for #1 replicate's PB closer..MY VOTE #1

Hi, I like number one the best. The color are less of a contrast. Although there are certainly things to like about number two - the colors of the body.

  41. Both are amazing. When I first looked, I thought the same artist had made both. I like the brighter colors just a tiny bit more in #2, though. Again, both are stunning.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh, my gosh. They're both beautiful, but if you twisted my arm and MADE me pick, I'd say number 2, but I have to find out first if number one has a gun. Just askin'.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Well, they're about the same but if I have to pick... #1. I like the subtle color more than the, what seems on my screen, bright colors. Awesome job on both. I saw these in the PB mag too and loved them.
